So I think we can safely assume that Jesus was talking about a different type of water here than the water involved in water baptism. It doesn’t tell us, but I am sure that we can deduce that Nicodemus had at least heard of John the Baptist, even though I’m sure he would not have been baptised by him. It is said that the one had to commit the Old Testament to memory to become a Pharisee, or leader of the Jewish religion.
